Gympie is a heritage and gold mining town located on the Bruce Highway 160 kilometres (approximately 2 hours) north of the Queensland capital of Brisbane. It is approximately 40km inland from the coast and is the hub of the Cooloola Region of Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The Cooloola Region covers approximately 2,973 square kilometres and is situated between Noosa and Fraser Island in sub-tropical south-east Queensland and includes the Cooloola coast, the rural hinterland of the Mary Valley and the towns of Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, Amamoor, Kandanga and Imbil. Tourists visiting Gympie can enjoy the historical and wilderness attractions of the region. Take a heritage walk past traditional shop fronts and see excellent examples of 19th Century architecture, visit the Gold Mining Museum, ride the "Valley Rattler" a steam train which travels through the picturesque Mary Valley. Walk in the State Forest or National Parks, visit Tin Can Bay where you can see wild dolphins that frequent the area, Rainbow Beach with its coloured sands, shipwreck, lighthouse and a departure point for nearby Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island. | |||
